Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based practice used to promote long-term behavior change. In addition to the accessibility of the style, it is important to note that trauma-informed principles of care overlap directly with Motivational Interviewing.

Learning Objectives:

After the training, learners will be able to identify the three communication styles as it relates to motivational interviewing.

After the training, learners will be able to list the OARS technique components and apply them to evoke change talk.

After the training, learners will be able to correlate the spirit of motivational interviewing with the principles of a trauma-informed system of care.

Jeremiah Kaplan, Senior Research & Training Specialist

Jeremiah Kaplan is a Senior Research & Training Specialist for ASU’s Center for Applied Behavioral Health Policy (CABHP), a research and training center under the Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC). He holds degrees in Computer-Aided Drafting & Design and Human Services along with certifications in Instructional Design & Development; Mindfulness Instruction; Communities that Care (CTC), social development strategy; eLearning software; Adobe Creative Suite; Database Management (including LMS Administration); as well as Motivational Interviewing. He has been a Motivational Interviewing International Network of Trainers (MINT) member since 2021. He is a certified Mental Health First Aid instructor (adult and youth) and has served as Commissioner for the Arizona Supreme Court’s Family Improvement Committee since 2020.
