Event description

Description

As part of the A Taste of West Cork festival, Bantry Historical Society are organising a field trip to the Kealkil Stone Circle and Carriganass Castle, meeting at the Ouvane Falls Inn, Ballylickey, Bantry at 10.00 a.m.

Knowledgeable local guides Áine and Dan will escort visitors around both sites, and guests have the option of a festive lunch at an additional cost at the Ouvane Falls Inn after their tour.

The Kealkil Stone Circle complex

This one of West Cork’s most iconic Bronze Age monuments, illustrating three different monument types of this fascinating time in our prehistory. Situated in the hills above Kealkil village, it boasts spectacular views of both the Mizen and the Beara peninsulas stretching out majestically into the sea. This atmospheric site speaks of communities of ancient star gazers and metallurgists, who could see the source of their precious copper in Mt. Gabriel to the south, and the place of the setting sun, the house of their ancestors, to the south west.

Carriganass Castle

Situated on the bank of the Ouvane River, this well-preserved 16th-century castle represents the most northerly of the O’Sullivan Beare castles. Its dramatic history will be told by Dan Sullivan, an engaging community activist who oversaw the transformation of this derelict ruin into a wonderful amenity that can be enjoyed and studied by both local and tourist alike!

This is an outdoor tour, so please wear warm, waterproof clothing and and suitable footwear, as ground conditions may be quite damp, depending on the weather. For further information, contact Bantry Historical Society - bantryhistorical@gmail.com.
