A Taste of The Bread Project: Serving Up Job Skills & Jobs
Event Information
About this event
A SNAPSHOT OF THE BREAD PROJECT
Imagine being low-income without a job and facing multiple barriers to employment because you are formerly incarcerated or a new arrival in the U.S. as an immigrant or refugee. Discrimination, unstable housing, inability to speak English fluently, limited formal education, or lack of transferable skills all stand in the way of gainful employment. Since our founding in 2000, we have supported more than 2,200 Bay Area women and men navigate these challenges on their journeys to start a new life and gain economic self-sufficiency.
Currently, The Bread Project's core services include:
> An intensive, 5-week, 150-hour 'Food Prep & Baking Job Training & Placement Program', offered in person and online 10 times annually,
> Preparing 26,000 Community Meals annually for the homeless and food insecure, and
> Mentoring 4-6 food entrepreneurs annually (mostly people of color) with production guidance and kitchen space during non-training hours.
A TIME TO CELEBRATE
We will celebrate our 20th & 22nd Anniversaries and highlight successes during the pandemic and where we're headed going forward. You will hear brief stories of our graduates, entrepreneurs in residence, and leaders.
We will honor Susan Phillips, co-founder of The Bread Project, along with two of our most generous funders, the Woodlawn Foundation and Chevron, each having contributed more than $1 million in support of our mission over the years!
We are grateful to Salesforce for an exceptional Ohana Floor venue, and to Kaiser Permanente our lead sponsor and community partner!
FOOD & WINE
A Taste of The Bread Project would not be complete without a few tasty bites prepared by our own Chef and Bread Project team. We are also pleased to feature the cuisine of Ladle & Leaf, formerly the San Francisco Soup Company, and Semifreddi's, two of our long-time partners and supporters, as well as BAKESUM, Love Healthy Foods, and Squabisch Pretzels, entrepreneurial startups we are pleased to have supported in our Entrepreneurs' Incubator Program. A choice of wines, waters, and soft drinks are also available! And who knows what might lurk in the goodie bags waiting for you on departure.
LIVE & SILENT AUCTIONS
From trips and specialty dinners to sports memorabilia and tickets to arts performances, you will have plenty of items to bid on in support of local residents wanting to learn food prep and baking and get a job. Thomas Durein, our gifted auctioneer and friend, is sure to help you open your pocketbook!
ENTERTAINMENT TOO!
We are grateful to Equanimous Jones, a unique collaboration comprised of piano, saxophone, and drums, for gracing us with their sounds and support. The band members met while attending Stanford University, and have over 25 years of musical experiences together. They bring a fresh, soulful, and energetic touch to traditional jazz and R&B standards, as well as spirited, innovative original compositions. The band swings, bops and improvises in a way that pays tribute to the masters and innovators of jazz.
