A Study in Collage Artist Talk

We are pleased to invite you a special evening as we talk with the artists exhibiting in our current exhibition, "A Study in Collage."

Our doors will open at 6:30 pm and the artist talk will begin at 7:00 pm. Not only will Julia be asking questions, but we also have time for the audience to ask questions as well. They all have amazing backgrounds and stories about their artistic journey that we will be discussing.

The eight local artists' work in this exhibition showcase a wide variety of media and techniques. You'll be able to see hand-cut pieced paper, paper with acrylic, pen and wax, digital print on aluminum, acrylic with mixed media, encaustic with mixed media, paper, vintage and decorative paper collage on 1930’s pay certificates and upcycled packaging with acrylic and motheaten sweaters with wooden buttons!

The artists:

Julie Christenberry - I am an abstract mixed media artist based in Washington, DC. My work explores the intersection of man and nature and how humans impact and interact with the natural world. In these rapidly changing landscapes. I try and show the beauty and ugliness that exists in our culture and world. This dichotomy can be found in everything and is essential to our survival and possibly to our destruction. I mostly hope my work inspires personal reflection and invites individual interpretation and feelings.

Theresa Esterlund - Theresa is an artist and educator who lives in Arlington, Virginia. After retiring from a professional career in museum education, she has been channeling her vision to inspire compassionate connections into a stationery business that reflects the intersection of her artistic and mindfulness practices. Her collages are wondrous microcosms—windows that open to the inside—as well as abstract landscapes and other arrangements. She also brings her love of gathering, sorting, and composing to letterpress, which gives her a path to integrate words and phrases from her poetry. Theresa is a Letterpress Associate at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center.

Khadija Jahmila - Khadija Jahmila (b.1993, Maryland) is an Afro-Caribbean visual artist, creative entrepreneur, and thrift hunter. She is best known for her surreal and futuristic original collage artworks including her popular “Back to Love, Back to Cosmology” zodiac series. Specializing in cut-paper and digital collage, Khadija creates cosmic worlds that explore Afrofuturism and celebrate the otherworldliness of the African diaspora.

Tina Scott Lassiter - Tina Scott Lassiter, MBA, is a self-taught artist/photographer, an author/writer, a professional speaker, workshop facilitator, and an integrative health professional. Her intricate hand-cut, pieced-paper and torn paper collages, dictated by current events and social issues, materialize as statement art and have been included in several live and virtual group exhibitions. National magazines and journals have selected both her collages and photographs for inclusion in their publications; her work serves as the catalyst for discussion in public forums. Tina was commissioned to create an image that came to represent the strength, courage and resilience of any woman and later received a Community Service Award for her work in the healing arts from a women’s business and professional organization.

Sonya Michel - Sonya Michel is a member of Touchstone Gallery in Washington, DC. She has been making art since 2016, when she retired as a professor of history and Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her artwork seeks to explore and highlight the visual interest of everyday life, and she uses a variety of found and prepared materials, along with conventional artists' mediums, to reveal the patterns, textures, shapes, symmetries and asymmetries that surround us in our daily worlds.

Sabiyha Prince - DC-native Sabiyha Prince is an anthropologist, author, and visual artist whose work has been exhibited at Bus Boys and Poets/Takoma, and The Anacostia Arts Center, Art League, and Hill Center, as well as The Zenith and 11eleven Galleries. Sabiyha has also shown through Black Girls Who Paint and the Petworth Artists' Collaborative in Washington, DC.

Alexandra N. Sherman - Alexandra N Sherman’s art explores the landscape of the mind through watercolors painted from her subconscious, installations with found or created objects, and collage using vintage and antique ephemera. She seeks to give the viewer an intimate experience through works that explore the uncertainty and mystery inherent in life, ourselves, the environment and the need for conservation. Her work depicts the spaces in-between, the seen and unseen through ambiguous narrative that invites the viewer to complete the story.

Marcie Wolf-Hubbard - Marcie Wolf-Hubbard received her B.A. from the University of Maryland in Studio Art and studied Fine Art & Illustration at the Maryland Institute, College of Art. Her paintings in encaustic (wax) and mixed media have been exhibited widely on the East Coast. Marcie is an instructor at Glen Echo Park, Yellow Barn Studios and The Smithsonian. I have always loved to draw- maybe as a connection to the world, my response, or appreciation. My intimate, quiet observing connects me with my subjects. What captivates me about encaustic painting is the surface. The painting is a play of light, with a surface you want to touch. Added texture, luminosity, and dimension all help in my construction or building of my artwork. I add, and take away, sometimes making the painting more of a sculptural form.
