About this event
A spy
During WWII, Phil’s Kastellorizian grandmother was trapped in Athens and was recruited to be a spy, rescuing Australian, British and New Zealand airmen caught behind enemy lines. Phil will share his grandmother’s heroic experiences and reunion in Australia with her four children.
His grandmother’s experience is the subject of Phil’s published book “Someone else’s war”. It’s available for purchase at the event with proceeds kindly donated by Phil to the KAV.
A great escape
Phil will also share his grandfather’s story of escaping the WWII bombing of Kastellorizo on a ship sponsored by the British and Australian governments. This is against the backdrop of the White Australia Policy, with parallels drawn with the plight of today’s refugees. His grandfather settled in Darwin and founded a large building business.
Don’t miss Phil’s insightful talk and slide show on two wars and two Kazzies.
