Complementing the author event, Historic Germantown is offering two special tours of the Deshler-Morris House (5442 Germantown Avenue), where Ona Judge was enslaved in the Washington household in the early 1790s.

Tours step off at 5:30 pm and 6 pm and capacity is limited to 10 people per tour.

Erica Armstrong Dunbar (GFS ’90), author of Never Caught: The Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge, is the Blue and Gold Distinguished Professor of Black American Studies and History at the University of Delaware. Her first book, A Fragile Freedom (2008), chronicled the lives of African American women in the urban north during the early years of the Republic. Armstrong Dunbar has been named a distinguished lecturer by the Organization of American Historians, and has received fellowships from the Ford Foundation, Mellon Foundation and Social Science Research Council. She appeared in the documentaries Philadelphia: The Great Experiment and The Abolitionists, a PBS American Experience production. This event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase.


The Friends Free Library Community Writers Series celebrates reading and writing and features nationally known authors with local ties to Germantown. Established in 2013, it is held at the Friends Free Library, which has served the community and Germantown Friends School since its founding in 1845. The FFL is one of the first free libraries in the United States.
