A Sistrunk Legacy: FREE Sort Film Screening and Community Talk

Come out and enjoy a short film created BY THE COMMUNITY!!!!

 

 

Join us at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center for the screening of the community created short film, Heroes of 6th Street and The Rise and Fall of The 4 Pillars. This will include a Community Talk-back featuring Odessa Bennett {board member of the Old Dillard Foundation} - sharing memories of the Victory Theatre - an African-American theatre that opened in 1945.

The community created short film is a new short created during a film workshop by Cathleen Dean - Director & Producer of Black Cat Media Group and the Miami/Ft Lauderdale 48 HFP.  Cathleen will be working with up to 20 community members to create this piece.  

 

Also screening:  Heroes of 6th Street and The Rise and Fall of The 4 Pillars

Heroes of 6th Street:

A family of African-American superheroes fights against food deserts, gentrification and a nefarious real-estate mogul.

The Rise and Fall of The 4 Pillars:

About the gentrification of Black South Broward and the losing of our village.

We will conclude with a Community Talk-back featuring Odessa Bennett - remembering Victory Theatre - an African-American theatre that opened in 1945.  This community discussion will be moderated by Niki Lopez

About the Cathleen Dean:
Cathleen is Director/Producer at BlackCat Media LLC. and adjunct professor in communication studies at Nova Southeastern University’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. Cathleen Dean has spent several years as both talent and behind the scenes in radio, television, and film. She is the Miami/Fort Lauderdale producer for the 48 Hour Film Project. Cathleen is an alumnus of Columbia University.

With a series of intergenerational community gatherings (Kikis), arts workshops and other events the Sistrunk Legacy project invites the elders and youth of Historical Sistrunk to share and document their memories and stories of this unforgettable, unshakeable neighborhood and to transform those powerful lived histories into extraordinary art. 

This series of FREE events will be ongoing until November 2019
