Bigger Thinking on Biodiversity
Making Connections across landscapes

Ask someone to tell you what biodiversity looks like and they render up images of south pacific coral reefs, tropical forests of Central America, and maybe even the rich high-elevation Appalachian forests of southwestern Virginia.  And, indeed, these are all globally recognized biodiversity hotpots.  But, our understanding of biodiversity is changing, due to new discoveries that are expanding the functional boundaries of biodiversity.  We are now recognizing its quantifiable benefits virtually everywhere.  And thus, it is also time to broaden our ideas about how, where and why to conserve it.

With some focus on Virginia, come explore concepts that broaden our ideas about biodiversity and discuss their potentials for maintaining and increasing biodiversity.

Jason Bullock

Jason Bulluck started out romping around in the fields and woods of eastern North Carolina, where he grew up before studying biology at Appalachian State University.  These days, he works to assure that DCR-Natural Heritage's maps and data are used to make wise land use and conservation decisions in Virginia.  And, he still grabs any opportunity for he and his wife (also a biologist) to get their two young boys outside to romp in and explore nature too.

Jason is the Natural Heritage Information Manager for the Virginia Dept. of Conservation and Recreation. Virginia Natural Heritage is nationally recognized for using biological expertise; rigorous data management and development; interactive mapping and modeling approaches; proactive data sharing and partner support; and strategic conservation planning to enable science-based conservation and land use decisions. Exemplary products include the Virginia Natural Heritage Data Explorer, LandScope Virginia and LandScope Chesapeake, the Coastal Virginia Ecological Value Assessment and the Natural Communities of Virginia.

Science Pub RVA

Science Pub RVA connects curious citizens and creative scientists over a sip of some sort at informal gatherings in non-academic settings.

What to expect  A short, jargon-free presentation by a local scientific thinker and a slightly longer period dedicated to questions and dialogue among the attendees and with a local scientist.

What to bring  No background in science is needed.  A smidge of curiosity is all it takes to enjoy a fun and engaging time.  Pub is in our name, but sipping on a glass of water at these free, open-to-the-public events is completely copacetic.
