A Salute to Salut! France Meets Philadelphia with Therese Dolan, Lynn Miller, and moderated by Martha Lucy

About this Event

Join authors Lynn Miller and Therese Dolan as they discuss their new publication, Salut! France Meets Philadelphia (Temple University Press) with Martha Lucy, Deputy Director for Research, Interpretation, and Education at The Barnes Foundation.

Salut! chronicles the French presence in Philadelphia’s history, culture, art, and food. The authors trace the French influence from colonial and revolutionary times to the contributions of nineteenth-century French philanthropists, such as Stephen Girard and the Dupont family, to the art that graces the city and its museums. Salut! provides a magnifique history of Philadelphia seen through a particular cultural lens.

Lynn Miller is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Temple University. He is the author of, among other works, Global Order: Values and Power in International Politics and Crossing the Line (a novel), Postcards from Delphi (a memoir), and the co-author (with James McClelland) of City in a Park: A History of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park System.

Therese Dolan is Professor Emerita of Art History at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and Architecture. She is the author of Manet, Wagner, and the Musical Culture of Their Time and Inventing Reality: The Paintings of John Moore, and the editor of Perspectives on Manet.

Martha Lucy is Deputy Director for Research, Interpretation, and Education at the Barnes Foundation. A specialist in 19th-century European art, she is the co-author of Renoir at the Barnes Foundation (2012) and has published many essays on topics ranging from the noirs of Odilon Redon to the motif of the mirror in Impressionist painting.
