Event description

Description

"An estimated one in five women has been sexually assaulted during her college years -- one in five. Of those assaults, only 12 percent are reported, and of those reported assaults, only a fraction of the offenders are punished." President Barak Obama, September 19, 2014 at the launch of "It's On Us" campaign to end sexual assault on campuses.

The truth is sexual crimes on college campuses have increased. Women ages 18 to 24 are at an elevated risk of sexual violence but you don't have to become a victim. Give yourself the training, education, and resources you need to protect yourself on and off campus.

All of the presenters have been a victim of sexual assault or work with survivors of sexual assault. We understand how a wonderful college experience can suddenly turn into a nightmare due to an act of sexual violence. We also understand the terror, trauma, shame, confusion and anger that can linger with a victim long after the attack. So we came together to offer our stories and expertise in hope that we can help prevent young women from becoming a victim of sexual violence.

During our workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Protect and defend yourself
  • Develop an awareness of your surroundings
  • Recognize pre-assault behavior
  • Understand how predators think and what they look for in their victims
  • Avoid dangerous situations
  • Stay calm in an emergency situation
  • Use fear to your advantage
  • Become an effective witness
  • Protect yourself using non-lethal defense devices
  • Protect your rights and get help immediately if you are assaulted
  • Process the physical and emotional challenges
  • Take steps to overcome a traumatic experience

This workshop is designed for women ages 16 to 30 who are college bound or in college (undergraduate or graduate student). However Mothers, Grandmothers, GodMothers, Aunts, etc. may attend on behalf of their loved one who is away at college or has a prior commitment.

Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
