Event description
Learn about Christopher Ludwick, Baker-General to the Continental Army, taste period gingerbread recipes and tour Historic Sugartown.

About this Event

Niel DeMarino, of the Georgian Kitchen will enlighten us about Christopher Ludwick, the Baker- General for the American Continental soldiers. General Washington endorsed him to be appointed “Superintendent of Bakers & Director of Baking in the US Army.” Niel will give an illustrative talk about this man of many occupations, travels, and philanthropies. Ludwick came as a German immigrant to the British colonies and grew to be a patriot for the American cause of Independence. His civic concerns extended beyond the war effort and focused growing his business and helping on the poor and uneducated of Philadelphia.

Our speaker, like the subject of his talk, is also a baker of gingerbread & other fine confection and prepares and sells period baked goods. Some items from that enterprise, The Georgian Kitchen, include historically accurate foodstuff (such as teas, coffee), along with culinary items and kitchen equipage will be available for sale.

Expect to “meet” a unique character and enjoy excellent samples of gingerbread in a delightful rural setting of the crossroads village of Sugartown. The meeting will take place at Historic Sugartown’s Carriage Museum The doors will be open @12:30P.M. for the participants & registration.
