Description

A Reason for Reading

Audience : 1 Lead teacher on grades 3-8 and/or school administrator ( to attend all sessions)

This 3 session series will focus on supporting students in grades 3-8 to analyze and interpret texts to foster deeper comprehension and writing about reading. Skilled facilitators will engage participants through the modeling of specific instructional strategies designed to help students to:

  • Connect and accumulate portions of texts as well as entire texts to make logical inferences.

  • Analyze the craft and structure of texts to determine the overall structure, the function of sections of texts, the techniques the writer uses as well as the impact of the writing on the reader.

  • Practice deductive and inductive reasoning to support their analyses of the texts, critique authors' ideas and explain their own reasoning in discussions and writing.

Participants will plan close reading, read aloud and shared reading lessons along with writing lessons that they will enact in their classrooms. The major focus of these lessons will be the blow-by-blow mapping out of high leverage, research-based strategies for diverse learners. Back in classrooms, teachers will monitor to know that students are able to use those strategies for success, as reflected in the student work products that they will share at each session.

Course Requirements: Teachers will be required to bring student work samples and teacher artifacts to reflect what they have tried in their classrooms. Teachers are also required to share their learning with their administrators and school PL committee to detemine school-based PL supports throughout the year.
