Event Details

Using a novel methodology drawn from across the social and cognitive sciences, FrameWorks Institute has been partnering with NHSA to investigate how people think about human services, how that thinking differs from expert understanding and with what consequences for policy and program support.  This descriptive research yields important strategic insights into where exactly people “get stuck” and why they consistently resist new information.  A second phase of prescriptive research is now underway to solve these “gaps” and to identify explanatory metaphors and values that can open people up to new understandings.  At this meeting, FrameWorks CEO Susan Nall Bales will share on-the-street interviews in which ordinary Americans struggle to come to terms with the multiple functions of human service providers, the work we do and the issues we address.  From the latest research in the field, FrameWorks will share a series of “before and after videos” that show how explanatory metaphors can make all the difference in people’s perceptions and openness to engagement.  This session is part of a process of discovery by which FrameWorks will ultimately develop a complete storyboard of reframes for use in the field.

National Human Services Assembly

The National Human Services Assembly is an association of America's leading nonprofit human service providers. It was created by top national executives in the sector, who believed their organizations could accomplish more collectively than individually to advance their missions and optimize performance. The National Assembly is comprised of roughly sixty-five members, most of which are national headquarters of service provider organizations. These groups and their respective local networks collectively engage with nearly every household in the country.
