Event description

Description

Award-winning playwright, author and essayist, Caryl Phillips, is performing as part of an event to remember David Oluwale. His 2007 book, Foreigners, features the life and brutal death of David Oluwale in Leeds. The event is being organised with the Remembering Oluwale charity and in association with the University of Leeds. Join Caryl in an evening of poetry with readings by Imtiaz Dharker who was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2014 and Glyn Maxwell whose volumes of poetry include The Breakage, Hide Now, and Pluto.

David Oluwale arrived in Hull as a stowaway from his native Nigeria in September 1949. He served 28 days in Leeds Prison for his breach of maritime regulations. Twenty years later, in May 1969, he was pulled out of the River Aire, at Knostrop in Leeds, where he had drowned. David had spent ten of the sixteen years between 1953 and 1969 in High Royds Psychiatric Hospital; for the other six years he lived rough on the streets of Leeds. In November 1971, two Leeds police officers were acquitted of the manslaughter of David Oluwale, but were imprisoned for assaulting him.

Our photo shows the sculpture of David Oluwale specially made for the troupe at this year’s Leeds carnival called All Ah We Are Migrants, designed to highlight the contribution migrants make to Leeds and to the UK. Simon Namsoo and Joan Jeffrey are surrounded by troupe members in hibiscus flower costumes designed by Agnes Richards. More at www.rememberoluwale.org/kingdavid

The event will start at 7.30pm with doors opening at 7pm and the event is scheduled to finish at 9pm. Tickets are £6 / £4 concessions (including Leeds Library Members).
