Event description

Symposium: A Place at the Table: Librarians Leading Information Literacy Assessment for WSCUC Re-Accreditation

This symposium for CSU librarians will address best practices in assessing information literacy as a WSCUC core competency. We'll discuss challenges, successes, and taking a leadership role in information literacy assessment and accreditation on your campus. Join us in the lovely Compass Room on the waterfront campus of CSU Maritime Academy.

9:30-10:00 Coffee, networking

10:00- 10:10 Welcome

10:10-11:10 Creating Context for Information Literacy: Best Practices for Learning and Assessment

Dr. Jennifer Fabbi is the key information literacy facilitator for WSCUC professional development workshops. In this interactive keynote, she will communicate WSCUC’s expectations for documenting students’ information literacy learning at exit as a core competency, while inspiring the use of best practices within the context of your university.

11:15-12:15 Preparing for WSCUC: A Roadmap for Librarians

Barbara Quarton is the coordinator of library instruction at Cal State San Bernardino. In her presentation, she will share her experiences preparing her library (and herself!) for the WSCUC re-accreditation process. She will highlight ways in which instruction coordinators can become equal partners—and recognized experts—in the journey to integrate information literacy into the core curriculum.

12:15-1:30 Lunch and roundtable discussion, facilitated by Dr. Fabbi

1:30-3:00 Workshop: Assessing Information Literacy Digital Learning Objects

Lindsay O’Neill is the Instructional Design Librarian and a faculty member in the Instructional Design & Technology graduate program at Cal State Fullerton.

Many campuses rely on online tutorials as a significant component of their information literacy instruction program. But how well are tutorial learning outcomes and assessments aligned? In this workshop, participants will receive hands-on training in designing digital learning objects. Participants will use the backward design process to practice writing measurable learning outcomes, and then will design mini-tutorials that feature aligned content, practice, and assessment. No specific hardware or software is required to participate.

3:00-3:30 Wrap-up and next steps
