About the event:

The event is intended for anyone with a professional or personal interest in suicide prevention, including:

  • Front line health and emergency service staff
  • Researchers
  • Third sector employees and volunteers
  • Policy makers and health care management
  • Members of the public involved in or who would like to be involved in suicide prevention

The day will be divided into four sessions:

  1. The experience of being suicidal
  2. The process of becoming suicidal from first and second person perspectives
  3. The work of prevention
  4. Practical session

During the first session we will focus on the experience of suicidal feelings and ask: “What is it like to feel suicidal?" In the second session we will focus on the process of suicide, as it is experienced by suicidal people and their ‘significant others’. The last two sessions have a practical focus on suicide prevention work; during the last session delegates will have the opportunity to explore and give feedback on the information resources we have created based on the research.

Guest speakers include Professor Matthew Ratcliffe (Durham University) and Dr Christabel Owens (University of Exeter).

Places will be allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis. The registration fee is £70 (£30 concessionary if you are self-funded or work for a charity), and includes lunch and refreshments.

The event is open to everyone and the fee can be waived for those who would otherwise be unable to attend. If this is the case, please contact the research team via email (,uk) or phone 02074225537.
