A New Era for Child and Youth Welfare: Implications of the new Ministry for Vulnerable Children for Quality Social Service Provision in Aotearoa New Zealand

Organised by the Childhood, Youth Research Network supported by the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Education and Social, Work at the University of Auckland

In 2016 the New Zealand government announced the launch of the Ministry of Vulnerable Children - Oranga Tamariki. This will see the current CYF system replaced by a completely new model that claims to address the short and long-term wellbeing of at-risk children and support their transition into adulthood. The new Ministry is officially launched in April 2017 and this Public Seminar aims to:

• Provide a forum for discussion of the proposed changes and their consequences for people working with children and young people in Aotearoa New Zealand

• To bring together a wide range of professionals working in Child and Youth Welfare, Youth Development, Health, Education and Youth Justice to discuss some of the opportunities and challenges they may face in light of this major policy change.

• To discuss the perceived challenges, opportunities, and priorities for the new Ministry of Vulnerable Children

• To identify a range of possible policy priorities that could help improve professional practice and Child and Youth Welfare outcomes in the future.
