Event description

Description

Artist Melinda Schwakhofer presents an illustrated talk to coincide with her current exhibition - Este Vne Mvskoke (I Am Muscogee). Taking place in the exhibition venue, the talk will reflect the artistic and personal journey of discovery of her Native American roots as a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation.

Melinda's work is inspired by symbols and stories from the Muscogee tradition, as well as Melinda's personal family history and the cultural legacy of her tribe.

The history of all indigenous people in the United States is marked by physical and cultural genocide and land theft. The effects are felt even today, through an inherited a legacy of historical trauma and unresolved grief.

The survivors of colonisation live with both great pain and great guilt. Both have been passed on through the generations and still have powerful effects today. Buried beneath the pain is a kernel of pride that has been nurtured and is growing.

This talk will cover those themes. The evening includes a 3 course dinner, inspired by Muscogee Creek ingredients. Once you've booked, we'll contact you to confirm your meal choice: vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
