A Moveable Beast was an idea sparked in 2011, and has ignited into a dance / opera / theatre / film hybrid production unlike anything we've ever staged...now, three years later, you're invited to join Volcano, Crooked Figure Dances, and the Moveable Beaset Collective for a Work-in-Progress Showing. These performances kick off the final development phase before A Moveable Beast premieres in 2015.
The showings are Pay-What-You-Can performances, and we'll ask each audience member to give us a valid email address when they enter the theatre (if they're willing!) so that we can follow up with a brief survey.
Performance Dates and Times:
Friday, August 1 & Saturday, August 2 at 8:00 PM; Sunday, August 3 at 2:00 PM
The Theatre Centre, 1115 Queen Street West
PLEASE NOTE: online RSVPs end 5 hours prior to curtain. A small quantity of tickets will be available at the theatre for walk-ups. While this is a free event, we encourage you to Pay-What-You-Can at the door.
Inspired by Virginia Woolf's groundbreaking book, Orlando, A Moveable Beast travels thorugh a century of time with a black protagonist named Phillis, after Phillis Wheatley: an African slave turned poet, and the first Black woman writer ever published in North America. Our Phillis, however, can only imagine a room of her own...
A Moveable Beast presents an alternative way to view history, from the early 1900s to the present. Through references geared to the black Canadian experience, and with an aim towards the universal, Phillis becomes a stand-in for all of us, undergoing the challenges and joys brought about by each era that has led to our present moment.
Starring the astonishingly magnetic Canadian soprano, Neema Bickersteth, A Moveable Beast is a show for a singer / dancer surrounded by an animated stage design. It uses projected fine art, experimental film, music, dance, and classical vocalises to tell a story of identity - all without uttering a single word.
A Volcano Production in association with Crooked Figure Dances and the Moveable Beast Collective.
