Event description

Description

Cinephilia goes noir in the month of February with a flurry of guns, smoke, and shadows. Follow obsessive detectives, lethal beauties, and drifting killers from classic 1940s to contemporary neo-noir as men and women live, lie, lust, and die for life in the soul-sick city to bitter extremes.

Programmed by Thomas Barker and Weijie Lim

1. Feb 1st - 11th: The Classics

A survey of American, French, Argentinian, and Mexican noir classics from the 1940s - 1950s that treat murderous jealousy with a vigor unimaginable as gangsters, private eyes, doppelgängers, and femme fatales dressed in trademark trenchcoats and snap brimmed hats play out double-triple-quadruple crossings of guns and knives in shadowed alleys, swanky bars, and cheap hotels - all in the name of soured passion!

2. Feb 12th - 18th: Neo-Noir

In just about every country in the world there’s a word for crime pictures. Noir goes global with a slight revisionist twist as the film language becomes popularized. Beginning with Jean Pierre Melville’s groundbreaking Le Samouraï, we end with a sampling of hard-hitting fugitive films little seen elsewhere with a contemporary dive into Chinese Noir and Nordic Noir.

3. Feb 19th - 25th: Femme Fatales

"The dark lady, the spider woman, the evil seductress who tempts man and brings about his destruction is among the oldest themes of art, literature, mythology and religion in western culture. She is as old as Eve, and as current as today’s movies, comic books and dime novels.” - Janey Place’s Women in Film Noir.

This series focuses particularly on the female protagonists of a group of canonical noirs, from Phyllis Dietrichson of Double Indemnity (Wilder 1944), Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice (Garnett 1946) to the eponymous protagonist of Gilda (Charles Vidor 1946) and many more!

4. Feb 26th - 28th: Kurosawa Noir x 3!

“I am very fond of Georges Simenon and I wanted to do something in his manner.”

The miserable setting of postwar Japan is put on the screens as one of the most celebrated film directors in history, Akira Kurosawa (黒沢 明) tackles the noir genre and undercuts it through its lack of femme fatale tropes and radical employment of documentary footage. The three unmissable masterpieces selected are: High and Low, The Stray Dog, and The Bad Sleep Well.
