Event description

Description

In celebration of 20 years at their current location within the Arboretum at the University of Illinois, Japan House is happy to announce they are expanding their public outreach program by opening their doors on the 3rd Saturday of every month in 2018 for scheduled public tours, public tea ceremonies, and general shopping hours!

During A Look at Japan House from the Inside - Public Tour, guests will learn the history of Japan House, discuss design elements and aesthetics, and become aware of the significant contributions of Japan House going back to the original house in the late 1960’s.

Enjoy the beautiful Japanese gardens from the inside as you view the three Japanese tea rooms and historical photos in the general teaching area, as well as a rotating display of artifacts and treasures, some available for purchase. See the equipment and elements of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, as well as be introduced to other special events and workshops available to the public throughout the year.

Guests are encouraged to stay and shop a selection of handcrafted and imported items, as well as Matcha tea and tea ceremony equipment after their tour ends. Cash, check and credit cards accepted.

Guests will be asked to remove your shoes upon arrival, or to use provided shoe covers. You are encouraged to bring a fresh pair of socks to wear, preferably white (we have some to lend you if you forget).

Times: 11am, 12pm, 1pm (open shopping hours 11am - 1:45pm)

Duration: 20-30 minutes.

Cost: FREE ($5 Donation at the door encouraged)

Tours are limited to 25 guests, reservations recommended.
