Description

Tales of the Malay World: Manuscripts & Early Books (Conducted in Malay)

Ever wondered what librarians do? In this series of monthly talks at the Public Libraries, find out what makes our librarians tick as they share highlights of their works and the library collections.

Associate Librarian Nadirah Norruddin will elaborate on themes and stories behind some of the most renowned works from the Malay Archipelago. She will also highlight the transition from handwritten manuscripts to printing and explore Singapore’s importance as a printing hub for Malay publications in the 19th century.

Organised by the National Library, the ‘Tales of the Malay World: Manuscripts & Early Books’ exhibition introduces traditional Malay literature through well-known narratives, manuscripts and early printed books in Singapore and the Malay world. The exhibition is part of the National Library’s on-going efforts to make our rich Singapore & Southeast Asian (SINGSEA) content more accessible to the public.

About the Speaker
Nadirah Norruddin is an Associate Librarian (SINGSEA and Exhibitions) at the National Library. Her main responsibility is managing and developing the SINGSEA collection. Her research interest is in the customs and traditions of the Malay world and healing practices of Southeast Asia.
