Event description
Who’s got your back? Why you need a career sponsor in tech and engineering!

About this Event

Are you pursuing a career in engineering? Whether your focus is in engineering, project/product management, or design, you need a career sponsor.

At this meetup, you’ll hear from two leaders in the Phoenix engineering community: James Charles and Dasha Scheiffele. Both James and Dasha entered engineering despite the odds: James became a software engineer after a career change at age 33, while Dasha blazed her own path in a male-dominated field. Both have a unique view on what it takes to succeed in the industry and will share their inside tips for your success.

James and Dasha will show you how a career in tech and engineering is completely attainable to you as long as you know how to navigate your way around the field.

James Charles became a first-generation college graduate at age 33. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in computer science from the University of Washington in just three years.James has worked at Lockheed Martin, Pegasus Solutions, Skytouch Technology, MGM Resorts International, and Nextiva. He currently manages Cloud Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, Communication Platform as a Service (CPaaS), and DevOps at Nextiva.

Dasha attended University in Belarus with a focus on applied math and computer science - and failed miserably. She played online poker to make money and saved enough to come to the USA. Here, she resumed her computer science studies at GCC where she eventually met her first mentors - Carlos Nunez and Jeffrey Cruze. Carlos offered her a job as a TA for his engineering classes, while Jeffrey let her participate in and lead his calculus pre-exam reviews with students. It meant the world to Dasha that someone believed in her and trusted her abilities.

After graduating with an Associate degree, she began a discouraging and arduous job search which eventually led to her first engineering role... in a terrible work environment. She was later introduced to Nextiva, loved it, and has been with the company for a year as Sr. Unified Communications Engineer.
