Description

A Hair-Raising 80s Dance Party for Cancer Patients at MGH

Neon lights, music videos, karaoke, a dance floor, and a DJ playing the top 80s hits...

Come dance the night away to benefit the Innovation in Breast Cancer Treatment Fund at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)!

When I was diagnosed wtih breast cancer last year, I was lucky-- I had access to excellent medical care in the Boston area and the support of many family and friends. But after getting past the initial shock of my diagnosis and learning about the best treatment plan for me—surgery, 3 months of chemotherapy, 4 weeks of daily radiation and a year of targeted therapy—I worried about the days ahead, and especially any side effects from the chemo. I had a full time job, a 13-year old daughter and a long list of to-dos.

Around that same time, I learned from friends and my doctor about scalp-cooling, a procedure that can be used by patients with solid tumor cancers to try to prevent their hair from falling out as a result of chemo. Scalp cooling was recently cleared by the FDA for use in hospitals and cancer centers around the US. The overall idea of scalp cooling is to wear a special cap that freezes your scalp before, during and after certain types of chemo treatments to prevent the chemo medication from reaching the hair follicles.

I have no doubt that keeping my hair helped me in so many positive ways this past year. Why? It allowed me to reveal and talk about my experience on my own terms; I didn’t have to walk out in public or into a room and have people look, wonder or ask about my hair or my health. Throughout my treatment, I could look in a mirror and see the same person I’ve always seen. Perhaps most importantly, it provided a sense of normalcy for my whole family, including my daughter. During a time when so many things felt out of my control, I felt like I regained some control over what was happening to me. Of course, I believe you can stay positive and strong even if you lose your hair; I just know how much keeping it felt like such a gift to me.

Unfortunately, for many patients, scalp cooling just isn’t an option. That’s because the cost to use it isn’t cheap, with the cost ranging from $1500 - $2500 depending on the type of cap you use. And, most insurance companies will not pay for it. Understanding the difference that scalp cooling can make to patients and their families, my oncologist co-founded in November the Innovation in Breast Cancer Treatment Fund at MGH to help patients pay for this powerful tool in their cancer fight. To support this much-needed fund, I am holding this fundraiser. Every penny raised will go to this fund. There will be lots of neon colors, MTV music videos, karaoke, and dance floor and a DJ playing the top 80s hits. As many of us know, the 80s was all about HAIR :) I hope you'll join me!

FAQs

What is including in the price of the ticket?

Your ticket includes admission to the event, one alcoholic drink ticket (if 21+), hors d'oeuvres, and dessert. We will also have a cash bar and separate raffle event.

What is the Donation Only option?

This option on the ticket page allows you to donate to the fund without attending. Although eventbrite will issue you a "ticket" in your confirmation email, it will not provide admission to the event.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There is a parking lot but it is not easily accessible by public transportation. If you are using a GPS, please don't use the Apple Maps app as this will take you to the wrong location. Google Maps is fine. The entrance to Western Ave is on School Street so you can also use this intersection.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

You can contact Athi at 80sDancePartyforMGH@gmail.com

What's the refund policy?

Due to the nature of the event, we can't provide refunds. However, if you are unable to attend, you can contact the organizer to allocate your ticket to someone else or as a donation.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

That would be helpful; but you can also show us your confirmation email on your phone.

Thank you for your support of this important cause!!
