New York Center for Living is excited to partner with Legacy Outdoor Adventures and Summit Achievement to present, A Growing Treatment Field, Wilderness Therapy: History, Practice and Research, presented by Derek Daley LSAC, and Will White DA, MSW, LCSW, LADC.

9:30am-10:00am: Registration & networking with light breakfast provided

10:00am-12:00pm: Presentation

*2 CEU's are offered for LMSW/LCSW & CASAC's for FREE*

DESCRIPTION:

The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of how traditional treatment center programming, adventure therapy, and the wilderness environment work together to move clients through the process of accepting that they have a problem with substances, acknowledging that help is available if they seek it, and cultivating a desire for sobriety.

PARTICIPANTS WILL:

Learn the long history of the field.

Learn the ethical practices in wilderness therapy.

Learn the evidence based research related to wilderness therapy.

Learn of the various behavioral healthcare employment opportunities related to wilderness therapy.

Bios:

Derek Daley, Co-Founder and Admissions of Legacy Outdoor Adventures

Derek has spent much of the last decade working with individuals to create sustainable life changes. He began facilitating personal growth experiences as a head instructor with Red Cliff Assent in 2001. In 2004, as a senior field guide for Aspen Achievement Academy, he co-created an education resource manual designed to help guides understand and teach program curriculum. Derek was a key member in the startup and program development of Open Sky Wilderness Therapy. In 2006, he welcomed Open Sky's first student into the program and during the next 5 years served in such roles as Assistant Field Director, Guide Trainer and Field Manager. Derek played a key role in the medical and emergency response teams and is experienced in field-based incident command, medical first response and medication administration. During Derek’s time spent working in the wilds of the West, he has witnessed the influencing power of nature many times. Derek seeks to harness and share that innate power of nature.

Derek’s philosophy is based on the belief that within each person lies undiscovered strengths and the capacity to live a balanced and rewarding life. He is passionate about his work and deeply committed to the people who need help and are interested in the process of self-discovery. Born and raised in Utah, Derek is now raising a family of his own. His love and appreciation of family and community serve as the foundation of his work.

Will White, Director of Outreach and Business Development, Co-Founder, Owner of Summit Achievement

Dr. Will White is the co-founder and co-owner of Summit Achievement a hybrid wilderness therapy program located in Maine. Summit Achievement has been operating since 1996 as a licensed adolescent residential treatment program with a wilderness component. Will completed his MSW degree in 1987 and completed his Doctorate of Arts (D.A.) in leadership in 2011. His doctoral dissertation traced the evolution of wilderness therapy through critical leaders and incidents and is titled, Stories from the Elders: Chronicles and Narratives from the Early Years of Wilderness Therapy. Will wrote the history chapter in the book, Adventure Therapy: Theory, Practice, and Research, by Gass, Gillis, and Russell. Will also wrote, Stories from the Field: A History of Wilderness Therapy and is the host of the podcast, Stories from the Field: Demystifying Wilderness Therapy.
