About this event
**This is a virtual event that will be hosted on Zoom - you will need access to a computer or other device that is capable of accessing and sufficient Internet access. If you have not used Zoom before, you may consider referencing Getting Started with Zoom.**
Sofia Ali-Khan’s parents emigrated from Pakistan to America, believing it would be a good country. By the time she had children of her own—having lived, worked, and worshipped in twelve different towns across the nation—Ali-Khan felt deeply American, maybe even a little extra American for having seen so much of the country.
But in the wake of 9/11, and on the cusp of the 2016 election, Ali-Khan’s dream of a good life felt under constant threat. As the vitriolic attacks on Islam and Muslims intensified, she wondered if the American dream had ever applied to families like her own, and if she had gravely misunderstood her home.
Join Random House and Sofia Ali-Khan on Wednesday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m. ET on Zoom to launch Ali-Khan’s book, A Good Country. Equal parts memoir, history, and current events, A Good Country excavates the history of forced migration in the 12 American towns the author and social justice advocate has called home—revealing how White supremacy has fundamentally shaped the nation.
In conversation with Philadelphia journalist and Rutgers professor David A. Love, Ali-Khan will discuss her work—and why she ultimately chose to leave the United States.
This event is presented in partnership with CAIR-Philadelphia, Hurford Center for Arts and Humanities at Haverford College, the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship at Haverford College, the Interfaith Center of Swarthmore College, and the American Friends Service Committee.
This stirring virtual discussion is free to attend. You can purchase the book and support your local independent bookstore here!
We can’t wait to see you there.
