A Foundational Understanding of Nonprofit Finance
To set context, this series first explains the counterintuitive, upside-down financial system in which nonprofits operate and then offers a crash course in reading nonprofit financial statements. Building off these key concepts, participants then explore the most common nonprofit business choices and the way in which these choices should be managed across leadership roles within the organization.
Registration includes an invitation to join the live broadcast for each webinar, as well as a recorded version and downloadable PPT slides that participants can view at their convenience. Recordings and PPT slides will be disseminated shortly after each webinar. The webinars described below are offered as a sequence and are effective when taken as a course or purchased as single presentations, depending on an individual participant's needs.
Webinar 1: Operating in a Flawed System

The “money rules” are often reversed in the nonprofit sector and this 60-minute webinar provides a functional understanding of the challenging economic system in which nonprofits operate, such as revenue restrictions and upside-down business models. The webinar concludes with an exploration of the new, post-recession operating environment facing nonprofit leaders—characterized by the four horseman of the nonprofit financial apocalypse!—and the ways in which our traditional business models and assumptions must adapt to succeed in the future.
Webinar 2: Assessing Nonprofit Financial Health

To make good decisions, leaders not only need accurate, up-to-date, and clear financial information, but also the ability to interpret and use this data to inform decision making. This 60-minute webinar explores the fundamentals of nonprofit finance so that nonprofit leaders and managers feel better equipped to interpret nonprofit financial statements (paying special attention to the balance sheet and income statement) and assess their organizations’ financial position.
Webinar 3: Planning for Effective Capitalization

To be “well capitalized” a nonprofit needs to address three key components of financial health: liquidity, adaptability, and durability. As such, nonprofit organizations need cash on hand to support operations and manage risk, separate funds to support major changes in to the business model or programming, and adequate resources to support long-term infrastructure upkeep and facility needs. This 60-minute webinar addresses the basics of capitalization and key distinctions between the types of resources (“build” money vs. “buy” money) that can help organizations achieve their goals.
Webinar 4: Finance Across the Enterprise

Nonprofit finance does not exist as an entity separate from an organization’s programs; rather, it is the bedrock on which all successful programs are built. Likewise, an organization’s finances are a key driver of many management activities. This 60-minute webinar offers NFF’s perspective on effectively integrating financial management practices into organizational management, including governance, fundraising, and strategic planning.

A common myth in the nonprofit sector asserts that facility ownership is a stepping stone to financial stability—but a poorly planned facility project can wreak havoc on an organization’s balance sheet and mission. This 60-minute webinar explains the effects that real estate ownership can have on an organization’s mission, programs, operations, fundraising and financial health. To close the session, participants will learn to assess their own organization’s readiness to execute a well-planned facility project.

All webinar purchases include the live broadcast, as well as a recording and downloadable PowerPoint slides that you can view at your convenience--we send these to all registrants, regardless of whether or not they attend. The recordings and PowerPoint slides will be sent to the registered email address shortly after each live session.
How do I receive credit if I am taking this webinar series for CEUs?

Can I share my series package registration with other people?
While you are certainly welcome to have someone join you at your computer station to watch the webinar, it unfortunately is not possible to share registration with other people.
