Event description

Description

This two-hour forum will have seven presentations as well as up to twenty tables with information on not only alternative plans to the proposed USACE traditional plan of detention basins on the valley streams and a 4’ - 6’ wall all the way down the Ala Wai but also work that is currently being done in the streams to clean and monitor the water so that it can flow cleanly to the sea.

Come and learn

  • how the invasive albizia in the mountains affects the Ala Wai canal.
  • how the Genki Ala Wai Project aims to remove sludge and clean the waters of the Ala Wai Canal by using low-cost, environmentally-safe bioremediation technology based on Effective Microorganisms®.
  • how oysters are nature’s filters and cleaners
  • how the schools in the Ala Wai area all band together to do stream clean up and monitoring.
  • how canoe clubs pick up trash in the Ala Wai, Waikīkī Bay and Māmala Bay
  • how softer, more eco-friendly methods such as bio-swales and permeable surfaces can help to absorb our sudden rainfalls.

Come and see

  • how a 4’ wall all along the two mile long Ala Wai canal might look.
  • the sixteen canoe clubs that paddle in the Ala Wai..
  • why simply dredging the Ala Wai Canal is not the answer.
