Overview

THE GATE: The Story of America’s First Contraband Community

Join us for a special evening at the historic Ben Butler Homestead for an intimate work-in-progress screening of THE GATE, a forthcoming PBS documentary that tells the powerful, descendant-led story of the Civil War Contrabands and the community they created at Hampton, Virginia—the men, women, and children who self-emancipated at Fort Monroe and forever changed the course of American freedom. On hand will be filmmakers Laura Seltzer-Duny and Mike Mascoll, who will welcome your feedback and get your initial thoughts on this documentary in progress.
