The 1602 world map by Matteo Ricci. The 1500 Venice map by Jacopo de Barbari. The 18th century Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber. University of Minnesota historian Ann Waltner feasts on the resonances among the three works that have inspired the creative process--how her work as a scholar fuels the imagination and how work outside the classroom informs her teaching and writing.

Ann Waltner is a member of the history faculty and was the founding director of the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Minnesota. Her research is on kinship, gender and religion of China from the 16th to 18th centuries. Her most recent book is Family: A World History (with Mary Jo Maynes), published by Oxford University Press. She writes scripts for multidisciplinary performances with the early music group Sacabuche (www.sacabuche.com). With Marguerite Ragnow, Curator of the James Ford Bell Library, she authored an online course on Dream of the Red Chamber (z.umn.edu/redchamber). Her writings have appeared in venues as diverse as Ming Studies, Journal of Sonic Studies, and program notes for the San Francisco Opera.
