On Saturday, March 5th join the Floating Library and The Drawing Project for an afternoon into evening of music, drawing, poetry writing, book-making, taco-eating, well water tasting, and beer drinking at the Historic Schmidt Artists Lofts.

We are thrilled to host our Knight Art Challenge fundraising launch party together! The Drawing Project and the Floating Library are recipients of the 2015/16 Knight Arts Challenge award. Each project has been awarded a $10,000 grant but only if we meet the challenge of each raising $10,000 each in matching funds - that's where our fans come in! Join us anytime between 4-8pm with a donation of your choosing, this event is for all ages and proceeds support books on water and drawing in unusual places.

Last summer while the Floating Library was at Silverwood Park, Shannon Brunette and Lynda Monick-Isenberg of The Drawing Project, brought drawers to the lake to be inspired by the Library’s artist books and to collaborate with Sarah Peters and her librarians. We believe in the spirit of togetherness from water to land, drawing to bookmaking so we are joining forces again to launch our fundraising efforts. Sarah, Lynda, Shannon and a team of volunteers are working together to make the Floating Library and The Drawing Project a reality, help us meet the challenge by joining us on March 5th at Schmidt Artist Lofts.

At this event we have a variety of activities that await you including:

  • Floating bookmaking workshop with artist Aki Shibata *See description below
  • Freely improvised instrumental/ambient music curated by Andrew Thoreen of Har-di-Har featuring Noah Ophoven-Baldwin, Andres Crovetti, Andrew Thoreen, Pat Keen
  • Individualized poems written by artist Molly Van Avery
  • Drawing and book arts exhibition
  • Drawing projections by Aaron Marx
  • Informal and interactive drawing opportunities
  • Poetry inspired music and drawing performance with poet Steve Healey and wickedly talented artists creating books to be auctioned off at 7:30pm
  • Mexican food from Tavial Grill
  • A tour of Schmidt's Historic Well House
  • Beer from local Saint Paul Breweries

Pre-Party Workshop: Floating Books with artist Aki Shibata

3:30 - 4:30 pm, $45/person includes event admission

Learn a classic accordion book structure to fill with drawings and then fold a paper boat to cast your book out to sea. No experience necessary. Materials included. Imagination required.

All proceeds from the pre-party workshop and party support the Floating Library and The Drawing Project’s matching grant awards through the Knight Arts Challenge. Each organization received a $10,000 grant that requires a 1:1 match. Support us in raising $10,000 to fund books on lakes and $10,000 to support accessible drawing in odd places.

Thank you for your support and generosity in making art happen.

See you on the 5th --Shannon, Lynda & Sarah
