Sorting Out the Three D's: Delirium, Depression, and Dementia

9:00 am to 10:30 am (INVITATION ONLY: Senior Helpers Staff and Community Partners (referrals)

As people age, their brains become more vulnerable to chemical changes, damage, and disease. Recognizing the differences among changes that signal an acute illness or medical emergency, symptom of mood or emotional condition, or a chronic progressive, and terminal condition that will eventually rob a person of their cognitive abilities is vital in providing the best possible care and responding effectively when changes are noted. Each of the three "D's" of dementia, delirium, and depression/anxiety has a unique onset, duration, impact on alertness and arousal, possible causes, and treatment recommendations. This session will help providers recognize and respond more accurately to reduce 'non-helpful' hospitalizations, delays in medical attention for acute illness, non-treatment of treatable conditions, and premature discharge of residents who might be able to stay in the community.

Using a Positive Approach to Care

11:00 am to 12:00 pm (INVITATION ONLY: Senior Helpers Staff and Community Partners (referrals))

Caregivers often struggle with how to interact and communicate when the individual is repeatedly asking the same questions or telling the same stories, accusing other of stealing items that they themselves have hidden, make rude or inappropriate comments, calling people names or using profanity.  Because the behavior can change from one moment or day to the next and can vary widely between individuals, it may seem like the person living with dementia is deliberately choosing their behavior. The goal of this session is to help caregivers manage their own behaviors for improved outcomes and interactions. This session will also provide learners strategies and methods of providing help to people with dementia that recognize losses and use retained abilities to promote positive outcomes in interactions. Emphasis will be placed on helping learners to approach people with dementia safely and consistently, provide verbal support and responses that reduce distress, and improve social engagement. The session will be very interactive with the goal of providing knowledge, skills and attitudes that will change daily outcomes of dementia care.

Navigating the Journey of Dementia

2:00 - 4:00 PM OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

This program is designed for care partners of those individuals who are living with dementia.  The session will address the difference between normal aging changes and changes due to dementia and will discuss the characteristics of the most common types of dementias. Structural and functional brain changes will also be explained, as well as the different states in the progression of dementia, focusing on retrained abilities rather than losses. The session will introduce physical and verbal techniques for managing challenging situations in care. Strategies to minimize or reduce the risk of negative outcomes in hospitalization situations will be provided and discussed. There will also be suggestions to help the car partner reduce stress and help them care for themselves to stay as healthy as possible. The goal of the session is to assist in offering awareness and techniques that emphasize positive ways to connect and interact through the journey of dementia.
