Description

A Day in AZANIA, A Pan African Celebration of Freedom
Produced by the F.U.N. Manifesto

The field of quantum physics and some of our religious mystics suggest that ultimately the “human mind creates what it imagines.” It is also said that “the greatest tool of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” For a person that believes they are “less than” behaves accordingly. The same is true of those who believe themselves “greater than”. Both willingly, though often unaware, maintain their role in the all consuming cycle of oppression. We see this pattern in domestic violence dynamics and the same is true of fighting between nations throughout recorded history. From either the seat of dominance, the position of the one who is to submit or the voyeur, once exposed to ideas of oppression the mind is occupied with protection from, retaliation against and/or the obliteration of that form of injustice as defined by the individual. Because “oppression” remains the focal point around which the mind is grappling, without some corrective therapy, humans will recreate violent relationships and circumstances until another idea is planted. With this understanding, A day in AZANIA is designed as a collective expression of FREEDOM, LOVE and JOY as a revolutionary act of decolonization, rejuvenation and alchemy.

A day in AZANIA, a Pan-African Celebration of Freedom, is an interactive community gathering, performance installation and cultural exchange designed by The F.U.N. Manifesto. The day begins with movement, co-operative visual and written word creation, and a talk on the role of “love and joy” in movement building.

AZANIA is a magical and mischievous universe. In this “time next to now” blackness glows in the dark and Spirits joyfully serve spirits to the people, as they have waded in deep waters not so patiently awaiting the return of human connection. AZANIA is filled with LIFE and is at once urban and otherworldly; digital and organic. The walls are filled with glyphs, collage and video of the local people's ideas on freedom and the Spirits interaction with those ideas. The aroma is familiar, comforting and intoxicating. The sound is lush, pulsating and multilingual featuring performances by F.U.N. Manifesto founder/ American born singer and artivist, Jennifer Johns.
