Event description

Description

On August 21, 2009 a blowout in the Montara oilfield, off the Kimberley coast, caused millions of litres of crude oil to flow uncapped into the Timor Sea for more than 70 days. It became Australia's biggest offshore oil spill disaster yet few Australians even remember the event. But across the sea in West Timor thousands of seaweed farmers and fishermen have been living with the aftermath of the pollution. Eight years on they are still reeling from the effects of the oil and the toxic dispersant Australian authorities sprayed on to the oil in a bid to break up the slick.

A Crude Injustice is a WA produced documentary that tells the story of the battle for justice by some of the poorest people in the region against the might of a multi-billion dollar oil company and Australian complacency. It is a story of environmental justice that every Australian needs to hear.
