Description

This course is now full. However, please do send us an email at cyclingcentre@bristol.gov.uk if you are interested in finding out about the next round of courses.

We are offering a course of six cycling skills development sessions for riders aged 7-12.

Dates

The sessions will run on six Saturday mornings between 9am and 10am on the following dates: February 3, 10 and 17 and March 3, 10 and 24.

Cost

The cost of all six sessions is £30, payable at the start of the first session (cash payments only please). Children eligible for free school meals are £15. Please complete this Eventbrite form to reserve a place for your child.

Content

These sessions provide a fun way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and aim to improve bike handling skills. Sessions will be led by British Cycling-qualified cycling coaches Jason Streather and Marianne Britten and will take place on our traffic-free track and paths.

They will use structured games and activities to help young riders develop key skills and techniques such as efficient pedalling, braking, gears and co-ordination on the bike as well as giving children the opportunity to cycle with new friends! The sessions cater for a range of abilities, from children who are competent young cyclists who want to practise basic bike handling skills to more experienced riders who are interested in developing the skills they need to take part in their first race.

These sessions are an ideal follow-on from Bikeability courses (though it is not obligatory to complete any Bikeability courses if your child is a competent rider).

FAQs

Does my child need to be able to ride a bike?

Yes! These sessions are for children who can already ride a bike and have good basic bike handling skills. They need to be able to stop and start independently and steer with confidence. If they want some additional practice they can attend the drop-in sessions at the Cycling Centre and/or do the Bikeability Level 1 course. More details on the Cycling Centre website.

What do I need to bring?

Coaching sessions will require parents/carers to complete a consent form. If you can print and complete in advance and bring to the first session that will be very helpful. Helmets are compulsory (we have some to use on site if required. Children need to wear clothes that won't get caught in any wheels and we strongly recommend gloves (we have some to borrow if required).

What kind of things will the children do?

During the first session we will split the children into two groups based on riding experience. Group 1 will do games and exercises such as weaving through cones, practising cornering, cycling in an ever-smaller space without putting a foot down and slow races. Group 2 will do similar games but with more confidence/speed. They may also practise passing objects to each other while riding, holding each other's shoulders while riding, practising drafting and close riding, sprint starts etc. The sessions may also include some fun, handicapped races.

Do I need to stay with my child?

You are welcome to, but do not have to unless your child is under 8. Our coach has a current DBS and Bristol Family Cycling Centre staff will also be on site.

Will these sessions turn my child into the next Lizzie Deignan or Mark Cavendish?

We can't guarantee it! The emphasis of the coaching is on learning bike handling and cycle sports skills in a fun way - but these are skills that will provide a solid foundation if your child wants to progress in any cycle sport discipline, whether for fun or competition.

What bike does my child need?

They don't need any special type of bike, although it must have front and back brakes and ideally gears so riders can participate in all activities. Helmets are compulsory. Children's bikes can be borrowed from the Centre if required. If you would like to use one of our bikes please notify us in advance so that we can reserve one for you (subject to availability).

Are there age requirements to enter the event?

The sessions are designed for children aged 7-12. Seven is the minimum age. We appreciate that younger children may be very competent riders and they are very welcome to join our open and family cycling sessions (see our timetable for more information).

What if my child cannot attend all of the sessions?

We appreciate that not all children will be able to attend all six sessions. However, to keep prices low for everyone we can't offer a discount for missed sessions.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the session?

If you are driving you can park in the car park next to Action Indoor Sports (for SatNav use BS14 0XA). The Cycling Centre can be found at the bottom right hand corner of the car park. You are, of course, welcome to cycle. If you are planning to use one of our bikes and want to arrive by bus, then routes pass within 10 minutes' walk of the Cycling Centre. You can check routes on the Travel West website.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please send us an email at cyclingcentre@bristol.gov.uk or call us on 01275 832800.
