Event description
The College of Medicine and Dentistry invites you to join us for 'A conversation with The Conversation'.

About this event

Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates and academic staff are invited to attend a one-hour session on how and why to write for The Conversation. The Conversation Australia and New Zealand is a unique collaboration between academics and journalists that in just 10 years has become the world’s leading publisher of research-based news and analysis.

Everything you read is created by academics and journalists working together, supported by a team of digital technology experts. Professional editors turn knowledge and insights from academics into easy-to-read articles, and make them accessible to readers like you

Founded in Melbourne in 2011, The Conversation Australia and New Zealand attracts 18 million unique reads worldwide, and now operates as a global network of sister sites with dedicated teams working in Indonesia, Spain, the UK, US, France, Africa, and Canada.

This ‘Conversation with The Conversation' will be presented by Liz Minchin, Executive Editor at The Conversation. She's a Walkley award-winning journalist and author, with two decades of experience in newspapers, radio and online. Ms Minchin co-authored 'Screw Light Bulbs' — a 2010 book on how Australia could get serious about tackling climate change. She joined The Conversation in 2012 and has been Executive Editor since 2016. Liz works closely with editors and partners, and also regularly delivers Pitching and Writing Masterclasses.

In this session, Liz Minchin will cover:

* how to write for The Conversation's non-academic readership

* the benefits of writing for The Conversation

* what sort of ideas the editors are seeking

* how to pitch an idea

* how editors decide what pitches to accept

* what happens if you get accepted / rejected

Come and learn how to make The Conversation work for you.
