Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

Professor Stuckler will be visiting the University of Melbourne for a few days in February to present the annual McCaughey Oration. He has also agreed to participate in an informal conversation session with staff across the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. Early career researchers and students are particularly encouraged to attend.

Professor Stuckler’s recent books, The Body Economic: Why Austerity Kills (2013), and Sick Societies (2011) have garnered attention around world. In the Body Economic Professor Stuckler and his co-author, Dr. Sajay Basu, provide comprehensive analyses of the impacts of contrasting policy responses to historical can recent economic shocks, including the Global Financial Crisis. Their analyses show clear associations between austerity policies and increases in rates of death, disease and social distress in populations.

Drawing from the fields of social epidemiology; the political economy of global health and development; and comparative analyses of social welfare regimes, this work offers critical perspectives on contemporary public policy and civil society debates. In 2013 Professor Stuckler was named one of Foreign Policy’s Leading Global Thinkers and an article published in The Financial Times called his book “a powerful indictment of the unnecessary suffering and rising mortality rates associated with austerity policies unsoftened by remedial social programmes”.

Come along to listen and ask questions as Professor Stuckler discusses his work. This event is free and is hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
