About this Event

The GRAMMY Museum will welcome multi-platinum recording artist, musician, composer, arranger, and singer Morris Day and his co-author—GRAMMY-winning musician, co-composer of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing, and renowned music biographical author, David Ritz—for a discussion on the making of Day’s new memoir, On Time: A Princely Life in Funk. The conversation will be moderated by Scott Goldman, and Day and Ritz will be selling and signing copies of the book after the discussion.

No one was closer to Prince or knew him longer than Morris Day. So to tell the story of Morris Day is to tell the story of Prince. Not because they were inseparable or because their paths never diverged, but because, even when their paths did diverge, they always intersected again. In addition to a highly successful solo career, Morris Day is best known as the lead singer of The Time. He co-starred with Prince during a breakout acting performance in the blockbuster film, Purple Rain. The new memoir, On Time: A Princely Life in Funk, is a comprehensive, free-wheeling extension of Day’s music, his life with Prince, and the culture from which the Minneapolis funk scene was born. Throughout the book, Day channels Prince’s voice to create a conversation between him and the late artist, with Prince there on the page to protect his legacy, argue with Morris's interpretation of events, and continue the dialogue that started when both musicians were in their early teens. Day looks back on a life of turbulence and triumph; his search for meaning in both music and romance; and his subsequent second-act success with The Time, whose music is his lifeblood and soul. He chronicles his creative process with an explosive prose that mirrors his intoxicating music. Day’s story is a fast-paced page-turner replete with unexpected twists and shocking surprises.
