Description

Join the Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation and the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in welcoming Dr. Abdulla Elyas to the University of Chicago. Dr. Elyas is a software programmer and entrepreneur who has founded several technology-based companies including Careem, the largest ride-sharing app in the Middle East.

With an initial mission of easing the lives of people in the Middle East, Careem has become the fastest growing technology company ever seen in Middle East, North Africa, Pakistan and Turkey. Today, the car hailing app Careem, is considered a tech Unicorn valued at $1.2bn. As the biggest eCommerce company in the MENA region, the company is transforming the region: creating jobs, empowering women, and acting as a role model for future entrepreneurs. Dr. Elyas will talk about how Careem came into being and where it is heading over a special lunch event on October 18th from 12-1:15pm.

Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP.

The event is offered in collaboration with the Middle East Institute.

Middle East Institute

Founded in 1946, the Middle East Institute is the oldest Washington-based institution dedicated solely to the study of the Middle East. Its founders, scholar George Camp Keiser and former U.S. Secretary of State Christian Herter, laid out a simple mandate: “to increase knowledge of the Middle East among the citizens of the United States and to promote a better understanding between the people of these two areas.” MEI has earned a reputation as an unbiased source of information and analysis on this critical region of the world, a reputation it has meticulously safeguarded since its creation. Today, MEI remains a respected, non-partisan voice in the field of Middle East studies.
