A Conversation on Cultivating New Faith Communities: How is God Calling Us to Reinvent Church?

Tuesday, October 29, 2019
7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
$10 suggested ticket price (see below for info regarding pricing options)

How do we discern when and how God is calling a faith community to something new or to establish a new faith community? What are steps in the discernment process? What happens if our proposed plan differs from God’s plan – how do we adapt? Join church planters The Rev. Emily Scott (leader of Dreams and Visions, a project of the ELCA) and The Rev. Daniel Vélez-Rivera (Vicar of St Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, a uniquely bilingual congregation), in dialogue with The Rev. Dr. Altagracia Pérez-Bullard (VTS Associate Professor of Practical Theology), on the topic of imagining, building, and tending new faith communities. Hear about various church planting experiences and lessons learned.

About our Panelists:

She was the Director of Worship at The Riverside Church from 2007-2009, and a co-founder of Music That Makes Community. Her work at St. Lydia's has been covered by The Atlantic and the Wall Street Journal. Her book, For All Who Hunger: Searching for Communion in a Shattered World, will be released in Spring, 2020 from Convergent, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Emily is the founding pastor of St. Lydia's Dinner Church, a congregation in Brooklyn whose mission is to “dispel isolation, reconnect neighbors, and subvert the status quo.” She is now cultivating a new spiritual community in Baltimore called Dreams and Visions.

The Rev. Daniel Vélez-Rivera is passionate about establishing loving Christian communities with and for all people. When St. Gabriel’s launched its Hispanic Ministry in 2014, it became the first bilingual, multicultural Episcopal congregation in Loudoun County, Diocese of Virginia. Daniel has also planted bilingual worshipping communities Massachusetts and serves on the General Convention Task Force for Church Planting and Congregational Redevelopment. Daniel is married to Parker Gallagher, his partner of twenty-four years.
