In the homogenous community of SLO, it can be awkward and uncomfortable to confront matters of racial justice. The continued killings of unarmed African Americans at the hands of law enforcement, and the movement and actions that decry them, grab national headlines a few times a year. In our comfortable bubble, it can be tempting for some to turn a blind eye to our country's current and historical institutional racism. Sweeping these issues under the rug is not an option for the small population of African Americans living in our area, and so some of us joined together with like minded people who also wish to advance a local dialogue around race.
This Conversation about Race in America is a discussion guided by short videos, followed by small group discussion and sharing. This is the first workshop hosted by R.A.C.E. Matters SLO County, and we aim to provide a brave, compassionate space for dialogue. Content is appropriate for ages 13 and older.
