A Common Room for the Region at the Mining Institute?
Peter Stark is leading a team at the Mining Institute planning a major redevelopment and restoration of its building to the original design by Archibald Dunn. When complete it will house the Royal Chartered North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers and its archive and collection on the top floor. For the rest of the building they are exploring the concept of what a ‘Common Room for the Region’ might be and what kind of programme it might mount around the future of people and communities in the North East.
Peter will give a short presentation on where the building comes from, we will tour it as it is and then sit down, discuss and feed in our ideas about what it might become. There will be a cash bar and complimentary nibbles afterwards for those who want to continue talking.
