Spotsylvania, Virginia – The John J. Wright Educational and Cultural Center Museum is pleased to announce A Colorful Journey Through Hallowed Ground Living Heritage Bus Tour on Saturday, October 20, 2018. The 90-Minute tour transports travelers along the African American Heritage Trail (AAHT) and engages through multimedia, tour guides, interpretive performers, hands on activity and exhibits. The interactive tour focuses on significant historical and cultural assets within Spotsylvania, County from its 1720 founding to present day; attributed to the African American Experience. The Historic event kicks off at 9:00 am at the John J. Wright Museum located at 7565 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania, VA 22551.

The AAHT was developed under a Preserve America Grant from the National Park Service in March 2010. An archaeological survey under the grant provide support of contributions by Americans of African Descent to Spotsylvania’s heritage and provide the material content for the county’s newly developed African American Heritage Driving Trail (AAHT). The Heritage Trail which opened to the public in 2015 and its digital application encourage visitors to explore, discover and experience historic African American events, people and places along The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway.

Over 400 years ago, Colonist arrived in America. Upon arrival, the struggle of survival and the forge for freedom begun for the Natives, Colonist and their Precious Human Cargo. In January 1977 the first episode of the mini-series, Roots: The Saga of an American Family aired on ABC. The series, based upon the novel of the same name authored by Alex Haley shares the history of his African ancestors and their arrival and experiences in the New World. This renowned mini-series brought Spotsylvania County, Virginia considerable attention and provided America with a modern lens into the African American Experience and Colourful Heritage.

Spotsylvania is also home to James Farmer, Civil Rights Leader and Co-founder of Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) who moved to the Massaponax area in 1980’s. James practiced non-violent civil disobedience that lead to widespread sit-ins across America promoting voter registration drives, organized Freedom rides to protest segregation and taught at Mary Washington University until his passing in 1991.

A Colorful Journey Through Hallowed Ground Living Heritage Bus Tour is an exploration of History of Americans of African descent from Spotsylvania County’s 1721 incorporation to present. Travel along the African American Heritage Trail. Explore the Historic District. Experience Historical Battlegrounds. Discover the African American Experience through real-life stories of triumphs amidst the struggle for freedom and equality through audience driven presentations, first person interactions and multi-media engagement.

Heritage Tour Experience Guide (event website)

At the end of the tour, visits have the opportunity to join with the community for an afternoon of exhibits, museum events and hands on activities.

All JJW Museum activities are FREE and open to the public Noon-3:00 pm.
