USA Scrimmage Fundraiser for Starlings
An intrasquad match with net proceeds going to fund Starlings volleyball
Starlings is a non-profit organization that offers girls from lower-income, ethnically diverse, inner city environments a chance to play club volleyball. By attending this USA intrasquad match, you’ll be giving more girls like this a chance to learn and play the sport we all love.
Starlings was founded in 1996 by Byron Shewman, a former USA Men’s National Team player. Since then, Starlings programs have reached 30,000 girls in 40 cities all over America. 300 girls have received college scholarships as a result of participating.
In Anaheim, where the Women’s National Team trains, USA Head Coach Karch Kiraly thought it would be a good idea for the players to give something back to the community that generously hosts them. The players freely gave of their time and there were 10 National Team players at each practice, two times a week for 8 weeks.
Bring along a volleyball to donate
There’s one thing you can’t play volleyball without — a volleyball. So we’d like you to bring along an indoor ball to donate to one of the Starlings programs. New is great. Gently used is fine, too. If the leather looks like a 90-year-old sunbather, hang on to it for sentimental value. We’re not picky about brands or styles or colors. Just playability. If it’s round and holds air, some youngster without the means to buy one herself will get a heckuva lot of fun out of it.
