Event description

Description

This event is part of The Haresh & Joan Shah Lecture & Performance Series.

Writer, photographer, cook—Nik Sharma wears many hats, but his passion is centered on food. His love of food can be traced back to his memories of watching his parents and grandmother preparing dishes with great enthusiasm and love.

Nik Sharma grew up in a bicultural household where he could absorb and enjoy the difference influences not only in terms of what his family ate, but also cultural context. His North Indian father's culinary habits were very different from those of his mother, who hailed from Goa (a former Portuguese colony on the West Coast of India). It was through food that these cultures blended.

Through his weekly column in the San Francisco Chronicle, Nik shares recipes alongside the stories of his childhood—illuminating the dishes in a new way and bringing the context of his culture to each recipe. His first cookbook, Season, is filled with recipes that represent his experiences growing up in India and in the United States.

Join Nik as he shares the stories and recipes that have shaped his life and work.

Nik Sharma is the writer, photographer, and recipe developer behind A Brown Table, an award-winning blog that has garnered best-ofs from Saveur, Parade, Better Homes & Gardens, and the International Association of Culinary Professions. His weekly column, A Brown Kitchen, appears in the San Francisco Chronicle and he has written for Saveur, Taste, Food52, and Eater, among others. He was also featured in America, the Great Cookbook that contains recipes from 100 top American chefs and cooks. Nik lives in Oakland, California with his husband and two pets.
