The Birth and Growth of the Organic Food Industry: A Personal Tale

A Brown Bag with Paul Repetto, Founder of Horizon Organics

Bring your lunch and join President William Shutkin and special guest and pioneer in the organic food industry Paul Repetto for a discussion on organic food.

Come hear how organics are good for smaller farms and why they’re getting bigger. Learn how to deal with the gap between intentions (buy more organic food, save energy, etc.) and actions (eat conventional food, drive to the neighborhood market, etc.). How are the canopies spread by big organizations to provide opportunities for smaller ones. Do people really think organic foods are better and environmentally sound products and why do these answers represent real opportunities? Learn how to get sound clues about where opportunities lie for sustainable-based businesses and organizations.

All students, alumni, faculty and staff are welcome; bring your lunch and questions.

Space is limited to 30 so be sure to RSVP by end of day Tuesday, September 10th to secure a spot.

Speaker Bio:

After graduating from MIT with a degree in Management, Paul spent 18 years in the advertising business in Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles. During his career with N. W. Ayer and Foote, Cone & Belding, he was responsible for work on DuPont’s Teflon, Mazda, Kleenex and Huggies, and a host of other well known national consumer brands. He headed FCB’s account management, planning and strategy board in Los Angeles.

Paul entered the natural foods business by acquiring a small (and mostly bankrupt) manufacturer of snack products which, after a successful run of new products and a successful merger, became the country’s leading producer of both granola and fruit bars. After three years as President of Westbrae Natural Foods in Los Angeles, Paul co-founded Horizon Organic Dairy in 1991, one of the largest organic food brands in the country and the #1 branded milk, conventional or organic. The company had a successful IPO in 1998, was sold to Dean Foods in 2004, and is now a major component of White Wave Foods.

Paul was a founding partner and serves on the Investment Committee of Greenmont Capital Partners, a venture capital fund concentrating in the general area of sustainably based young companies.

Paul was a founding member of the Organic Foods Alliance and served on the board of the Organic Trade Association. He served as board chairman of E-TOWN, the Public Radio program, and as President of the Colorado Music Festival. Paul has been a guest lecturer at Yale, Northwestern, USC and the University of Colorado among others, as well as a featured speaker at a Young Presidents’ Organization national seminar. He lives with his wife Janet Pyle in Boulder.
