Event description

Description

The idea for this event was inspired by the story and spirit of Parihaka. Some of us wished to learn more about the story of the evening before the historical day of 5 November 1881. The Maori settlement of Parihaka in central Tarnaki was about to be invaded by 1600 soldiers and policemen and the land to be confiscated. This community, inspired by their leaders Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi, was committed to peace and non-violent resistance. The evening before (4 November) was spent baking 500 loaves of bread and the following early morning, the military forces were greeted and welcomed by singing children sharing baskets of fresh bread. Judith Frost-Evans from Pukerua Bay, shared this story at a bread making course in 2017 and we felt spontaneously inspired to create a Bread bakers Festival of Sharing, sharing stories of peace and reconcilations or stories of pain and anger as the other side of that coin. And that is what we did last year. Read here about last year's festival and about our visit to Parihaka. Bring your latest bread creations and experiments as dough, to be baked here. Alternatively, just turn up and join the happening! We will have the same format as last year: We will begin baking by 3.00pm, having a focussed moment of sharing and telling the story of Parihaka at 5.00pm and then share some food potluck style, from 6.00 onwards. Of course, we will have plenty of bread. So bring some food to share that goes well with bread! After dinner, we wish to gather around a circle and share our stories, poems or songs of peace, reconciliation and forgiveness, or anger and pain. Please bring a story/poem/song to share on this important topic. And then we all go home with loaves of breads to share and give away to our friends and neighbours on the morning of 5 November. This is a free event but there is a limit to our living room and veranda! So please get your ticket. I will set up a cash koha basket for the cost of ingredients. The event will be shaped by those who show up. Lots of space for spontaenous creativity! I offer the space and the oven! And the rest happens through all of us!
