Event description

Description

This free talk explores the long-running Yiddish-language advice column of the Jewish Daily Forward.

With writer and humorist Dr. Khane-Faygl Turtletaub, revisit the poignant and humorous letters of A Bintel Brief (Yiddish for a bundle of letters), the advice column of the Yiddish daily newspaper the Forverts.

Starting in 1906, the forerunner of today’s Forward anonymously printed readers' questions and posted replies. The advice column became wildly popular as recent Jewish immigrants sought advice about living in America. Truly reflecting the immigrant experience, A Bintel Brief became a map for those drowning in a sea of strange new customs, providing guidance on everything from family to finances and romance to religion.

This program is part of Yiddish Yesterday and Today, a series presented by the Chicago Adult Jewish Learning Initiative, a partnership of local Jewish organizations spearheaded by Spertus Institute and JCC Chicago with funding from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.
