9th Annual Sisterhood of Queens Event
Sat, April 8, 2017, 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM CDT
Come experience the power of transformation and growth at the CLASS 9th Annual Sisterhood of Queens Event on Saturday, April 8th, 2017. Through this year's theme-- If You Were in My Shoes-- we invite you, our guest and partner, to imagine your young adult self in our students' shoes and think about walking a mile along their path. This year's event will highlight our students' personal stories of triumph and success. We hope you will be a part of this remarkable celebration.
This year's event will be held at the Holiday Inn located at 549 S. Rock Road in Wichita, KS. This event is designed to build positive self-esteem in our teen girls by awarding deserving seniors with educational scholarships and to honor women in the community for their commitment and devotion to empowering others.
Our introduction will be given by Maria Melendez, social entrepreneur, motivational speaker, author of Take the Limits Off Your Legacy, executive producer, and women’s leadership advocate. Maria I. Melendez has embraced her mission of empowering others to live a life that embraces a limitless legacy. After leaving her high-profile career in the music business to pursue her purpose of empowering others to live life in purpose, give birth to their dreams and define their legacy, Maria has proven that she is the essence of living a purpose and legacy driven life in order to inspire others to follow suit. Featured in the ESSENCE magazine, Latina.com, Heartandsoul.com and recipient of several notable accolades, she is an influential leader whose faith, zealous drive, experience, framework, story and impact are key to the leadership development in women and girls around the world.
Our keynote speaker, Wanda Durant affectionately known as "Mama Durant" and "The Real MVP." Mother of businessman, Anthony (Tony) Durant and NBA MVP star, Kevin Durant of the Golden State Warriors, Wanda also holds the title of CEO and President of HDBA, LLC (Hope, Dream, Believe, Achieve). Through this organization, Wanda is able to share her message of empowerment with people from all walks of life, corporations, non-profit organizations, communities, faith-based organizations and youth groups. She particularly enjoys inspiring women, single mothers, and children to follow their dreams and set life goals.
Ms. Durant knows similar struggles that the girls we serve may potentially experience. At the age of 18, Wanda became a teenage mother giving birth to Anthony. After marrying his father, Wanda, at 21, gave birth to Kevin. Before Kevin’s first birthday, Wanda became a single mother. Inspired by her young sons and knowing God would lead their way, she dedicated her life to her children’s formative years, ultimately sacrificing her own aspirations to ensure a solid foundation for her sons’ future success.
In the recent years, Wanda Durant lends support to The Kevin Durant Charity Foundation, The Tony Durant Reach Higher Foundation, The National Single Parents Network, Baller Moms, Positive Tomorrows, and Mothers’ of Professional Athletes, amongst others. As a woman of faith, with belief in herself and her life’s achievements, Wanda recently shared her life story, in a Lifetime biopic, “The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story” produced by Queen Latifah that premiered Mother’s Day weekend in 2016. It is Wanda’s passion to guide her audience to realize that the hope is alive inside, encourage them to dream, and help them truly believe they can achieve the future they want.
