Description

Calling all MCG, SCUMS, AMC, and CMS members! We are pleased to announce the 9th Oconee State Park Fungi Weekend, September 21- September 23, 2018. We’ve welcomed a large number of new members in each of the clubs since our first Oconee weekend in 2008 so we’d like to encourage new folks to join us at this spectacular location. Weekend forays are a fabulous immersion learning experience providing the opportunity to meet new friends from all over the Southeast. Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression, the historic Oconee Park has 1,165 acres in the South Carolina Upcountry and is adjacent to Sumter National Forest, so there are plenty of areas to hunt for mushrooms. For more information, see the Oconee State Park website.
The variety of fungi at Oconee is amazing and never the same on two visits. We have found and identified well over 100 species on each of our visits, in 2008, 2009, and 2010 with very different species turning up on each visit. A species list from previous forays will be sent to attendees.
This year our mycologists will be Walt Sturgeon, Andy Methven, Arleen and Alan Bessette & Mike Hopping.
ACTIVITIES
We are finalizing the schedule of activities. In past years we have gone out foraying on Friday afternoon (starting around 1:00 PM), and Saturday morning and afternoon.
On Friday evening, after dinner on your own, we’ll hear a Mycologist Talk from one of our lead mycologists followed by an Ice Cream Social and Open Mic Night. Bone up on your mushroom songs, poetry, storytelling, and skits and share your talents with the rest of us! Then on Saturday evening, join us for our delicious Potluck Dinner and Live Auction (bring your donations and wallets and checkbooks !!) We will not have a presentation Saturday night as it has made the evening go on too long.
On Sunday morning we conclude with a “walk around the tables” led by our mycologists.

REGISTRATION
Each foray participant (adults and children) needs an individual registration regardless of type of accommodation. Pay for your registration using this Eventbrite page (above). During registration, you will be required to identify which mushroom club you belong to. If you are paying by check, pleae make the check out to Mushroom Club of Georgia.
Due to space restrictions, the number of attendees will be limited. When spots sell out, you will have the option to be added to the waitlist. We will fill spots that open up based on whomever is next on the waitlist. If a spot becomes available for you, you will be notified by email and have three (3) days to register. If you do not register within those three (3) days, your spot will go to the next person on the waitlist.
ACCOMMODATIONS
You will need to bring and prepare your own meals; food service is not available at the Park. There is a convenience store several miles away.
There are three options for accommodation:
1. Cabins
We have reserved all 19 cabins in the Park. All historic CCC-built cabins include one bathroom. Visit the Oconee State Park website to see pictures of each cabin. The cost for two (2) nights (including taxes & fees) is:
1 bedroom with additional sleeper sofa (sleeps 4) $206.36
2 bedroom with sleeper sofa (sleeps 6) $228.36
2 bedroom with sleeper sofa and loft (sleeps 8) $256.54

*****BOOKING ALERT***** To book a cabin, DO NOT USE the 1-800 number; CALL the Oconee State Park office DIRECTLY at 864-638-5353 and explain you are with the Mushroom Club group, reserved by Sam Landes. Reserve and submit your payment for the cabin directly with weekday park staff over the phone. You MUST call during the week 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Ask for Tabitha.

The weekend staff DO NOT have the capabilities of registering you. **DO NOT** try to book online or call the toll-free reservation number. They cannot make your reservation.

Booking Do's and Don'ts Summary

DO: call direct, call during the week, ask for Tabitha

DON'T: do not use 800 number, do not book online, do not call on weekends. Also, stay away from the Mountain Rest Bed & Breakfast nearby, many horror stories from those who have. If the cabins are full and you do not want to camp you can stay in a motel in Seneca which is 19 miles away. Would not recommend the motel in Walhalla.

Sharing cabins: Connect with other club friends when booking to keep costs per person down. If you book a cabin and are willing to share with other members to defray costs, email oconee@gamushroomclub.org with the number of spaces available in your cabin. If no cabins are available when you call the office, and you are interested in sharing a cabin with other members, email oconee@gamushroomclub.org, and we will try to match you with an available cabin.

2. The Barracks

The Barracks provide comfortable dormitory-style accommodation for 16 people at the unbeatable price of $25 per person for the two nights. It has four bedrooms with four bunk beds in each plus two large shared bathrooms, a big kitchen, two full-size refrigerators, and a living room. Barracks lodging may be co-ed. To book a space in the Barracks, use this Eventbrite page (above) to reserve and submit your payment.
3. Camping
There is a large, shady, full-facility campground for tents and recreational vehicles. The campgrounds are just past the main office. Visit the Oconee State Park website for more information about the camping facilities. To book a camping site, call 1-866-345-7275 (toll free) or reserve online at Reserve America. These sites cost $23.00/night plus taxes.
New option this year!! We have booked the "Group Campground" right next to the Barn where we identify the mushrooms and have the talk and auction. It is a primitive campsite with 20 bare sites for pitching a tent as well as a central firepit. There are bathrooms (toilets and sinks) across the adjacent parking lot as well as bathrooms in the barn. To shower you will want to walk or drive into the main campground to use those facilities. (Which we do have access to.) We are charging $10/weekend per campsite as you will see on the registration form. This will provide an opportunity for building community among those from different clubs camping together. You can still reserve a regular campsite using the links listed above with Oconee Park if you want a more private situation.

YOU help make this a SUCCESS
The Oconee State Park Fungi Weekend is a volunteer-driven event. You can help pitch in at anytime, but particularly after the Friday and Saturday evening events and Sunday’s “walk around the tables” helping to clean up and break down the event will go a long way towards making things go smoothly. Oconee State Park has welcomed us back year after year to hold the Fungi Weekend in their facilities, and we would like to continue the tradition in the future by leaving as small a footprint as possible. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
